Leonard produced countless recording sessions; some were the first recordings by artists later to become widely known. He introduced many female instrumentalists, among them The Sweethearts of Rhythm, and pianists Una Mae Carlisle and Hazel Scott (both fine singers as well). An all-star date for Decca in 1939, featured Benny Carter and Pete Brown - both doubling on sax and trumpet - Bobby Hackett on guitar, and Cozy Cole on drums.

Leonard first heard Helen Humes when, as a neophyte arranger, he wrote a chart that Basie liked and recorded for a session in 1940 (completed in "about the time it would have taken Sy Oliver to write an entire library for Tommy Dorsey"). Later, he was to produce a blues album for saxophonist Pete Brown featuring Humes.
